William Morris designs

William Morris (1834 - 1896) was, amongst other things, an English furniture and textile designer. Born in Walthamstow in east London he became apprenticed to Gothic revival architect G.E. Street. In the same year he founded the Oxford and Cambridge Magazine, a useful forum for development of his theories of hand-craftsmanship in the decorative arts. In 1861 he founded a design firm in partnership with the artist Edward Burne-Jones and the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the three of them having met whilst at Oxford and formed a group called the Brotherhood. This design firm had a profound impact on the decoration of houses and churches in the early 20th century. His main contribution was as a designer of repeating patterns for wallpaper and textiles, often based on close observation of nature. He was a major contributor to the resurgence of traditional textile arts and production methods.
